We have a broad range of people on the board from all avenues - the chief requirement is an interest in the community. That is not to say we don't welcome professionals as we can always use more input and expertise. Back to FAQs Must take a lot of time? Yes and No - it takes as much time as you are willing to invest. We have a very active board right now and with many people involved not only does the workload decrease, the valuable insight from a broader cross section makes for an even better neighbourhood. Back to FAQs I don’t think I would be able to help – what can I do? Everyone has something they can help with - it can be as simple as handing out balloons at the Neighbourhood Festival to helping set direction and policy to simply helping deliver notices for important events. We are always happy to involve people as it important to ensure close links to the entire area. Back to FAQs What are the boundaries? The boundaries of the NPNA is the area bounded Blanshard Street, Bay Street, Cook Street, and Pandora with a couple of anomalies - Dowler Street forms the boundary by Island Farms Dairy and the Ministry of Health Building on the corner of Blanshard and Pandora. Weird but true. Back to FAQs Do you work with other groups? We work extensively with other groups. We work with anyone that is involved in the neighbourhood and other groups that are of similar nature or of common interest. Our mandate is to ensure that the North Park area is represented and the common interests of the neighbourhood promoted. Groups we work widely with include:
What have you done for me lately? Well - let's see now -
Back to FAQs What is the Neighbourhood festival about? Party! Party! Party! This is when we kick up our heels and celebrate our Neighbourhood! Food, fun for all, and an opportunity for people of the entire neighbourhood to socialize. We also use the festival to bring a vitality to areas of the Neighbourhood that are sometimes not normally associated with a sense of joie de vivre. The picture on this page is a group of North Park people getting ad hoc Belly Dancing instruction at the 2006 Neighbourhood Festival. If you want to help out or participate please contact us! Back to FAQs Are you guys paid by developers? No - we are not paid by anyone - in fact I am sure there are a few developers that may be less than happy with us. Our approach is to look at proposals fairly and objectively as far as how well they will suit the neighbourhood while allowing the necessary growth to prevent stagnation. Some developers "get it" - other ones get asked some very tough questions and may not get approval from the NPNA. This is taken very much into consideration when the City looks at requests for zoning or other variances. Back to FAQs How come I haven’t heard of you before? We are very challenged at times in reaching all the neighbourhood. Condominums are difficult to direct notices to and we really appreciate it if someone in the building can post information. We distribute notices door to door as well as through electronic means. If you want to help - something as simple as asking to be on an email list makes it much easier for us to get information to you. We do not distribute our member list to any one - period - so you will not get spammed or a bunch of stuff you don't want. Plus electronic communication is much more environmentally friendly! Back to FAQs When are the meetings? Second Tuesday of the month at 7:30pm - Community Room - Victoria Police Station Next Meetings: (click on item for the agenda) Second Tuesday of the month at 7:00pm New - 1/2 hour earlier!- Room 200, First Metropolitan United Church 932 Balmoral Road enter off of Balmoral Road (click on item for the agenda) Are you aligned politically or any other way? Just the opposite - we probably have people from every persuasion on the board - the chief thing is that they represent the interests of the neighbourhood - other than that there is no affiliation required - except they have to have a sense of humour. Back to FAQs How can I get an issue I am worried about addressed? We would be happy to hear about it so we can see if we can help or direct you to some help. Feel free to attend a meeting and we will make the time for you to address the meeting or fire us an email or letter (address at the top of the page). Back to FAQs What goes on at the meetings? Meetings are kept very informal and interactive. Discussion is encouraged and points of view respected. Other than that we keep them relatively short with typically a brief report from each committee and any announcements. Some times we will have a guest such as a representative of an organization, the City, or a developer. Back to FAQs Can anyone attend board meetings? Yes - if you live or work in the area your are more than welcome! We strive to keep the process as open and community involved as possible. The only time we may have an in camera meeting under our bylaws is for board member disciplinary action (which we have yet to ever even come close to needing). Back to FAQs What about crime – why is there not a neighbourhood patrol? We work closely with the Victoria Police department and assist them in introducing programs into the community. We are really pleased to be co-hosting the Community Crime Prevention program. This program draws on the community to assist the Police in directing their efforts. To assist in this the NPNA has been mapping problem areas and finding information to help make the Community Safer. Back to FAQs What is in the NPNA Constitution and Bylaws?
